What do Chiropractors do?
Chiropractors use their hands to adjust the joints of your spine and limbs where signs of restriction in movement are found, improving mobility and relieving muscle spasm and pain. This allows your body's own healing processes to work more efficiently.
Incorrect movement of the joints of the spine or limbs can cause increased stresses on the muscles, ligaments, discs and joint structures. If neglected, this will result in pain and irritation to the nerves. In the long-term, this can lead to early degenerative changes (osteoarthritis).
Factors such as an injury, repetitive strain, lack of exercise, poor posture, poor diet and stress can lead to discomfort or pain.
What happens on your first visit?
Following a full case history and an appropriate examination of the painful and related areas (which may include xrays when clinicially necessary) an accurate diagnosis is explained to you.

What happens during the treatment?
The most common chiropractic treatment is the Chiropractic manipulative 'adjustment' when an audible release of the joint may be heard. This is due to a vacuum being formed when the joint surfaces separate and then release.
The treatment improves overall function, reduces inflammation and muscle spasm thereby relieving pain.
Exercise Rehabilitation forms an integral part of your treatment programme and involves specifically designed exercise for yourself and your condition. This is an essential part of your recovery process and will help prevent reoccurence of your pain by strengthening and providing stability for your problem area. (see Rehabilitation Exercise for more details)
